The Voice in the Hollow, written and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand. Holiday House, Peguin Random House. 2023. $25.99 ages 5 and up

"A woman, who had appeared,
held out her hand.

They headed into the Hollow
together.

It took longer than Hubert
expected.
"

For Hubert Cumberbun, the best place in his world is the library. Hubert loves stories and he spends as much time as he possibly can within its 'branches'. When a blizzard means an early closing time, Hubert decides to take a shortcut home. He'll go through the Hollow not through town, although it is rather a scary place.

Hubert is reluctant to venture forth. The smell of mothballs brings to sight a woman, seemingly out of nowhere. With both going the same way, the woman offers a guiding hand. It's a long and treacherous journey; Hubert holds tightly to the woman's hand through it all. With the warm glow of a light in sight, the two are happy to say their goodbyes. Hubert offers thanks and heads home. Looking back, he only sees one set of footprints - his own. Hubert runs and is just in time for hot chocolate, and with a story to tell his family.

Kids will absolutely love that, though there are no words to describe what is happening in the background, their travel takes the two past snow piles that look a lot like insects and bears. There are sure to be many stops to take a closer look as the tale moves forward. There are times to relax a bit, and times to feel fear. Few words are needed when they are accompanied by such remarkable visual storytelling. So worthy of sharing on more than one occasion!

Don't miss the chance to take a careful look at the map provided on the dedication page.
