NO! Written and illustrated by David McPhail. Roaring Brook, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 2009. $18.95 ages 6 and up

There is no dialogue to include prior to telling you about this book. There are only three words in it, and they are all the same. It is repeated three times, and very vehemently. The young boy has only one thing to say and that is "NO!" In doing so, he changes his small bit of the world. We meet him first writing to the President, sealing the envelope and adding the stamp. As he journeys through the streets on his way to the mailbox, he notices jets bombing an adjacent town, tanks tearing through the neighborhood where he must walk, troops kicking in the door of a family home, and a police man and his dog in hot pursuit of a felon. When he gets to the post box, he is met by a bully who knocks off his cap and threatens him. That is the final straw...this young man has had enough. NO!

That one word totally shifts the balance of power, and everything changes. We watch him begin the trek home with the bully following along. The police dog has determined that the felon is not so bad and might just need his face licked. The soldiers are providing presents for the occupants of the building, one of the tanks is powering a plow and a jet unloads a parachute with a bicycle attached that is used by the young boy and the bully to take a joy ride together.

Think of all that might happen if we let children, with no ulterior motives or political aspirations, make some of our decisions in all innocence and with the belief that they can change the world...one step at a time!

Don't miss reading what the boy has written to the President!

And be sure not to miss the very end of the story, when we get to read what the young boy has actually written to the President.
