This Plant is NOT Boring, written by Marie Hoy-Kenny and illustrated by Mike Deas. Orca, 2025. $21.95 ages 4 and up

"The pot tipped, and soil got all over Mia's desk - even
on her sandwich.
Mia dusted off her sandwich and held it out. "Time
for lunch, Plant. Hope you like baloney!"

The flower split open to reveal two
rows of gleaming teeth.

Why is it that every time a kid asks for a pet, the parent suggests taking care of something else first. When Mia asks for a dog, she gets a flower. What on earth is Mia supposed to do with a boring plant?

When Mom brings lunch, she is pleased to see the plant still alive. Mia is not impressed with the sentiment. Trying her best to find a way to make the plant less boring, she inadvertently removes a leaf. The plant does not respond when Mia asks it if needs water. Off they go on their first walk together.

After the pot spills, Mia offers a dirt-covered sandwich. She is visibly concerned when the plant gulps it down. It can't be true, can it? Thus begins a battle between the plant's crazy antics, and Mia trying to avoid talking about it with her mother. As days pass, the plant's consumption of favorite items causes great distress for the young girl. By Thursday, her mom is really impressed with the plant's growth.

Mia is at her wit's end when she discovers a tag in the plant pot that gives advice that Mia has been missing; the plant needs sunlight, water, and attention. What a change for both! By the end of the week, Mom admits that Mia is ready to care for a dog. BUT, is that what Mia wants?

Mike Deas does a terrific job of adding to the fun with with his acrylic paint, and the details and lines that were added with ink. He fills the pages with ever-changing perspectives, plenty of action, and fully expressive faces. Readers will want to pore over the pictures as it shared again and again.
