"During morning lessons, the young
caterpillars were taught everything
they needed to know about becoming
a butterfly.
THINK BLACK.
THINK ORANGE.
THINK BLACK.
THINK ORANGE."
The young caterpillars of the forest do exactly as they are told: eating, eating, eating. The instructions given them by their guardians do not suit Charley. Charley looks up in wonder, and sees the trees, the clouds, even the stars. Despite warnings, Charley isn't sure that he wants to be 'a big, strong butterfly'. Perhaps there are other paths to take. It might be fun to be something he is not meant to be!
The lessons continue relentlessly. As hard as Charley tries to concentrate on what is being asked of him, he can't help noticing all the beauty there is to discover in nature. When the time comes to form a chrysalis, Charley just can't keep his attention on thinking black and orange. Instead, he continues to react to outside influences: a bluebird, the sun, the stars, the clouds, and the mountains.
As the caterpillars emerge from their rest, they fill the sky with the wonder of their orange and black beauty. Which one is Charley?
"Charley's tiny home remained still as a stone."
When his time comes to break free and fly, Charley does exactly that ... with a bit of a twist.
