How to Catch a Clover Thief, written and illustrated by Elise Parsley. Little, Brown and Company, Hachette. 2021. $22.99 ages 4 and up

"But finally, he picked up the book and
pitched a tent ...

and built a campfire ...

and by the time Roy finished
carving out a canoe -

CRASH!"

Roy is a warthog, with a propensity for the taste of clover. He has spent days contemplating a clover patch that needs a tiny bit of time before ready for consumption. He has a stern warning for Jarvis, a neighboring gopher, about staying away from 'his' clover patch. Jarvis is quick to assure compliance. Roy tries to shoo the gopher from the vicinity.

Jarvis offers a cookbook before he hurries away. So many recipes! The one that holds the most interest requires a trip into the forest to find mulberries and mushrooms. Upon his return, Roy is sure that his patch has shrunk. There must be a clover thief! Keeping a constant watch is the only solution. Of course, Jarvis has advice. A suggested campsite leads to finding a log and hollowing out a canoe. What?? The patch is smaller again - much smaller!

Now, Roy is furious. He wants no more advice. Jarvis offers company, and a very boring, sleep-inducing story. What happens when he awakens is no surprise; it will surely elicit expected giggles. What Roy does with his new knowledge of 'best' books and learning is a surprise of the best kind!

A joyful story with characters that charm, and illustrations that bring this humorous story to full life.
