Lousy, Rotten. Stinkin' Grapes, written by Margie Palatini and illustrated by Barry Moser. Simon & Schuster Canada. 2009. $18.99 ages 5 and up

"The problem was, Fox was only so high...and the grapes were so, so, so high."

And so begins the quest for the 'tantalizing' grapes growing beyond Fox's reach. He tries hopping, skipping, even flying leaps to get them. But, it is a fruitless effort. However, Fox is nothing, if not wily, wise, witty and oh, so woebegone. He yearns for something he cannot have and he is not satisfied with the order of things as they are. He thinks perhaps he needs a bit of a boost, and then along comes Bear. He seems to be the answer to Fox's puzzle. In his wily way, Fox seeks help from Bear so that they may share the grapes. While Bear patiently listens to Fox's plan, he tries to interrupt with an idea of his own. Not to be outdone, Fox will not hear it. After all, Bear is brawn not brain. Who is the brains of the operation? We all know the answer to that question. When failure results, Fox includes Beaver, then Porucpine, then Possum in the plan. All for naught...the grapes remain elusive and unattainable. Unwilling to listen to anyone else's ideas, Fox stomps off with the notion that they were probably not worth eating anyway. His friends are finally able to enjoy the fruits of their own labor!
