On The Farm, written by David Elliott and illustrated by Holly Meade. Candlewick, Random House Canada, 2008. $18.50 ages 3 and up

"Her tail? As coy as a ringlet.
In her eye there’s a delicate sheen.
Some look at her and see a sow;
I see a beauty queen."

The front matter of this gentle book shows the farmyard and its inhabitants, quietly awaiting the poetry that is soon to be shared. We begin, as the day does, with the rooster. A slow walk takes us past each of the animals that make their home in this pastoral countryside. Lively and descriptive, David Elliott’s poems use simple truths to tell us about the doings on the family farm. They are accompanied by woodcut and vivid watercolor illustrations that match the tone of each tiny treasure. The accolades for this wonderful book are well deserved.
