Applesauce Season, written by Eden Ross Lipson and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein. Roaring Book Press, 2009. $22.99 ages 4 and up

"Applesauce season starts just about the time school opens, when it is still hot and summery but vacation is over."

Grandma is the leader of the pack and off the family goes to the farmer's market to get just what they need for the cooking extravaganza that is soon to take place. Everyone has a part to play in the making of the applesauce, and the eating of the apples chosen for just that reason. As the family works together, we watch each step. It is with great delight they share the process, and all the family traditions that are a part of the process. When all is said and done and the applesauce is ready, there is no shortage of sharing or ideas for its use. While doesn't help on the applesauce crew, he is great at finding ways to use it for the family's eating pleasure. It enhances the taste of pancakes, crepes, roasts and even a cake or two. The celebration of that first sauce of the season is not confined to family...neighbors and friends are also invited. With December and no new apples for sauce, the family finds other ways to use the delicious fruit. MMMM! MMMM! Good!

To top it off, the family recipe is included and brings the book to an end. Can you smell the delicious waft of applesauce in the crisp fall air? I know that I can.
