Little Cheetah's Shadow, by Marianne Dubuc. Princeton Architectural Press, Raincoast. 2020. $24.95 ages 3 and up

"Little Shadow was happy to
go first. And Little Cheetah was
happy to stroll behind. It was a
beautiful day.

"Can we stop at Mr. Boubou's
bakery?" asked Little Cheetah.
"I'd like to buy some bread for
lunch."

Little Shadow happily agreed."

Marianne Dubuc is adept at telling affectionate and touching tales of friendship that young readers will completely understand. In this one, she introduces Little Cheetah and Little Shadow. They haven't seen each other in a while; Little Cheetah has noticed and is looking to find Little Shadow  again.

Bea is a firefly friend, willing to help in the search. Turns out that Little Shadow is never far away. In fact, at the moment, all Little Cheetah has to do is look up. Little Cheetah climbs up into the treed with a question about Little Shadow's disappearance. Little Shadow is perfectly reasonable in response:

"You always get to go first."

"You always get to choose where we go."

"And you always catch my tail in the door,"
complained Little Shadow."

Being a true friend, Little Cheetah listens carefully and reacts. Allowing Little Shadow to take the lead, Little Cheetah learns an important lesson. When both decide that walking side-by-side is better, they change their ways. Until there is a bigger problem ...

The solution is sweet, and affirming. The colored pencil and watercolor images are signature scenes for this fine artist, and satisfying for her young readers.
