Singing In The Rain. Based on the song by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, with pictures by Tim Hopgood. Henry Holt and Company, Macmillan. Raincoast. 2017. $24.99 ages 2 and up

"Let the stormy clouds
chase

everyone from the
place.

Come on with the rain ...
I've a smile on my
face."

I just stepped on onto the front step to bring in the morning paper, and felt the full fury of a strong wind that has our windchill temperature hovering at -30C. Quite the shock, even though it is still March! YIKES!

Wanting to encourage the arrival of warmer spring weather, and since it is April 1, I share this newly illustrated picture book from the skilled hand of Tim Hopgood. It is the third book in a set that bring delightful images to some old, familiar songs. Don't miss What a Wonderful World (Henry Holt, 2014) and Walking in a Winter Wonderland (Henry Holt, 2016).

You may not have seen the movie; I am guessing that you will surely recognize the song. It is joyful, and I hope a reminder to everyone that warmer days are on their way. With the arrival of April, we can look ahead to spring showers and a cleansing of the earth in preparation for new growth. Oh, and don't forget the fun to be had in welcome puddles. Let the splashing begin ... and soon!

In homage to the movie itself, the opening double page spread shows a delighted and beautiful little girl hanging onto a lamppost, bright yellow umbrella protecting her from the elements. The rain swirls about, the birds sing and the music begins. At the page turn, more children appear dressed in bright and appealing gear. All are fully prepared to enjoy time spent outdoors as the rain pours down.

Off they go; laughing, dancing, and spending time together, unconcerned with the storm and ready to sing their hearts out. Their faces exhibit their joy, and their imagination knows no bounds. They fly through the sky on wings of song, leaving the city behind and finding themselves in a tropical jungle setting. Finally, the storm blows them home to sunshine and further adventure.
