Zachary's Ball, written and illustrated by Matt Tavares. Candlewick Press, Random House. 2000. $9.99 ages 6 and up

"On the first pitch, Buck took a mighty swing. But he did not hit a home run. Instead, he popped the ball straight into the sky. The crowd groaned.
But then, suddenly, the wind picked up and carried the ball right toward us."

The post season has begun! Now, I can watch baseball day in and day out for weeks. Saw two games yesterday, and am looking forward to another two series beginning today. So, here I am with a few baseball books.

I knew that I had seen Matt Tavares' Zachary's Ball at some earlier point in time, so I went looking and lo! and behold! there it was on the bookshelf in the basement. It's first on my list for today's post. It 's been a season of disappointment for avid Red Sox fans...I'm sorry that your team didn't make it this year. This book, though,  is sure to a favorite in your house.

Zachary and his dad are off to Fenway to see Matt's first professional baseball game. He is thrilled to hear the sounds, see the sights, and bask in the atmosphere created by the Sox' fans as the game gets underway. When his father catches the pop-up fly ball hit by Buck Spoonwell on the first pitch of the game, and passes it to Zachary, he is transported to another place altogether...the pitcher's mound!

Wearing a Red Sox uniform and pitching the final strike to win the game is the ultimate dream for any young baseball fan. That is precisely what Zachary does in his dream world before returning to reality and his seat with his father. Feeling its magic, Zachary returns home with the ball, sleeping with it under his pillow and dreaming astounding baseball feats night after night.

Many years later, Zachary is walking near the ballpark when a ball is hit over the wall and straight into his outstretched hands. A young girl, on her way to the game with her father, is pretty impressed. Zachary passes 'the magic' to another young fan with great pleasure!

Matt Tavares' love of the game in evident in every pencil-drawn, detail-filled illustration created for this winning book. Baseball fans will find much to relish in its pages.
