Animal A-Z, written by Louisa Cornford. Priddy Books, Raincoast. 2012. $9.95 ages 3 and up

"Koalas are gray marsupials with short, thick fur, sharp claws and tufty ears. Found in Australia, they eat lots of eucalyptus and spend most of their time asleep up trees. Baby koalas are called joeys."

The information is clear and concise enough that even the youngest listeners will understand it. And if you know young ones, you know how much they love animals. So, this is a great book for them.

The photographs are wonderful, and provide some 'aww' moments
as each page is turned to reveal the next letter of the alphabet and its chosen animal. You almost feel as if you are perched on the tree branch beside the adorable and dozing koala, or climbing mossy rocks with the huge brown bear. The colors are bold, and crisp.

Each of the informational paragraphs deals with how the animals look, where they live, what they eat; each is accompanied with a small text box that concerns size and compares the animal to an adult-sized human, giving height and length in imperial and metric measurements. Important words are color boxed to grab attention and labels are used to point out important features. The camel is labeled in three areas:

"Thick coat for cold desert nights.
Bushy eyelashes protect eyes from sand.
Two-toed feet."

Kids will quickly learn the given information as it is pointed out,  and will want to share it with others. A glossary following Z gives meaning for some of the more unfamiliar words. There are a number of animals and birds named that will not be entirely familiar to readers, allowing them to add to their store of knowledge concerning animals of the world.
