Snow, written by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Lauren Stringer. Harcourt, Thomas Allen & Son. 2008. $21.95 ages 3 and up

"The best snow
is the snow that
comes softly in the night,
like a shy friend
afraid to knock,
so she thinks she'll
just wait in the yard
until you see her.
This is the snow
that brings you peace."

I have always been in awe of Cynthia Rylant's words. Each one seems so purposefully and carefully chosen to make us wonder at the beauty of our language. Lest you think I am wishing for snow tonight or in the coming days, I am not. But, I cannot help but be awed by the lovely word pictures this fine author paints of the different kinds of snow that fall while we are in the throes of winter. It must make others envious of the world of white that some of us experience. She mentions the snow that sends you home early and results in 'snow days!' There is the snow that barely makes an impression when it falls...it is so light and delicate that it is hardly noticeable. We have all known such snowfalls, but few can put into words the absolute beauty of this white world, with such skill and honor for its being.

Lauren Springer brings this snowy world to life with acrylic painted snowflakes that dance before our eyes. The delight in the children's faces, the joy and peace that a grandmother and her grandchild feel as they explore their snow-covered environs and their calm return to the warmth of hearth and home remind us of the joys of the season we call winter.
