All the World, by Liz Garton Scanlon and Marla Frazee. Beach Lane, Simon & Schuster, 2009. $21.99 ages 3 and up

"Rock, stone, pebble, sand
Body, shoulder, arm, hand
A moat to dig,
a shell to keep
All the world is wide and deep"

I wanted so much to start the new year with a beautiful book! This celebration of the world and the people in it is just the thing. In rhyming couplets the author introduces a family and its glorious day together. They begin at the beach, collecting rocks, shells and other reminders of their visit. Then, it's on to a market garden where they explore the many foods and other fare that are for sale there. A park provides a welcome diversion, where grandparents watch their grandkids and their pets, families walk, bicycle and plan picnics. A storm brings a quick end to fun in the park and they scramble to a diner for a warm and welcome meal before finally ending their day with the extended family, who have gathered in joyful appreciation of life and love.

The words are perfect but would mean little without Marla Frazee's charming and quietly spacious panoramas. Together they make the whole...a timeless love song to the beauty in each day. We need only look around us to see the blessings of family, love and the goodness that is in our world. It seems an appropriate way to look at the start of a new year, and a new decade. This is one of my favorite books of 2009 and I will be sharing it as often as is possible in the coming months.
