"Chicken Little was not the brightest chicken in the coop. He was very excitable and prone to foolishness. One day he was doing nothing, his usual pastime when an acorn fell from the sky and hit him on the head. BONK! EEP!"
I am sure you have heard the Chicken Little story at some point in your reading life. Not this one, you haven't! Ed Emberley and his daughter Rebecca give new life to the naive and nerdy chicken who determines (when an acorn falls on his head) that the sky is falling! And he must run to save himself. Off he goes, with an umbrella overhead and no plan in mind. He 'bonks' into Henny Penny who is not much smarter and she is off with the news. And on it goes as they meet a host of friends, none of whom seems any better prepared or forward thinking than Chicken Little. All finally fatigued, it is their bad luck to run into Foxy Loxy...and you know what that sly old codger is thinking....mmmm! din-din!! As luck would have it Foxy Loxy might have an allergy to feathers, and the friends are soon safe and on their way home!
The story is not new, but the art is so irrepressible that you cannot help but fall in love with the foolish farmyard fowl and follow along on their inane trip to let someone know that there is disaster right around the corner. Their bodies askew, their eyes huge and full of fear and surprise and their inability to make a plan only makes them funnier to the rapt readers of their tale. Bright paper-cut collages burst across the pages and in one final fold-out we see the chaos of a sneeze when your tummy is full of fowl. Poor Fox...foiled again!
