Red Sings from Treetops, written by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski. Houghton, Thomas Allen & Son, 2009. $21.95 ages 5 and up

"Green is new
in spring. Shy.
Green peeks form buds,
trembles in the breeze."

Joyce Sidman is inspired by nature to take pen to paper and find the words that bring what she sees to the page. Her poetry is insightful, inspired and fresh. In her newest book she turns, once again, to nature and the colors found there. It began with a late winter walk and a chance sighting of a cardinal, singing with all its might. That spot of red in the apparent dullness of winter led her to look for color in her surroundings and she was amazed to find it everywhere, throughout the seasons. So we have a glorious new book of poetry that celebrates color through the year, filled with the marvels, the majesty and the mysteries of our world. I hope that reading this one will lead you to look for other books that she has written. If you do, you are in for a very special treat!
