The BIGFOOT Field Guide to CAMPERS (AND OTHER MYSTERIOUS CREATURES), written and illustrated by I. M. Furry, with help from Jami Gigot. Kids Can Press, 2025. $21.99 ages 4 and up

"GUIDELINE #7

Under no circumstances should you let a
camper use their click-flasher on you.

This could not only bring more campers
swarming, but you may also find that
your likeness will appear on various
trinkets, or what campers refer to as
"souvenirs."

Bigfoot prefers to stay out of sight, while learning about bears and rattlesnakes which can pose problems. The scariest creature for the knowledgeable Bigfoot who provides this field guide are CAMPERS. There are good reasons; the most frightening is earning an Exploration badge that requires them to take photos of nature.

Having those campers in their territory has created untold issues for Bigfoots. It even made them seek refuge deeper into the forest. In an effort to keep everyone safe from this intrusive species, this Bigfoot guide provides safety guidelines. There are 10 0f them. Starting with identification (lack of hair on limbs and faces, odor, and noise), he moves forward to discuss being seen by them (an absolute no-no), camouflage, staying calm, playing dead, sharing food, the click-flasher and its dangers, being fooled by their tears, steering clear of playgrounds and finally the acceptance that they are not friends.

Young readers will be enamored of the parallel story being told while Bigfoot is adamant about keeping to the guidelines. In fact, he comes face-to-face with Anna who is one of the campers, their story is told in humorous vignettes that go against every caution he is trying to impart. When the two finally say goodbye, her camper friends admit they thought Anna had been taken by Bigfoot. In reality, the two have learned an important lesson about being tolerant and kind rather than giving way to fear.
