Billie and Bean at the Beach, written and illustrated by Julia Hansson. Translation by B.J. Woodstein. Orca, 2023. $21.95 ages 3 and up

"Mom thinks Billie should go for a swim too.

SUDDENLY SOMETHING REALLY HURTS!!

Billie has been stung by a jellyfish.
Now she wishes she hadn’t tried.

Mom helps Billie out of the water.

Billie gets band-aids for the red marks,
even though
they aren’t bleeding."

Mom, Billie and Bean are spending the day at the beach, much to Billie's consternation. She rests in the shade while Mom reads and the other children there play in the water to their great delight. Bean, on the other hand, loves the beach and spends her time enjoying every momentous adventure. Bean then needs a swim to clean her doggy body. Mom thinks Billie should try the water, too.

That cold water is made by worse when Billie is stung by a jellyfish. The pain is intense and the sobbing loud. Band-aids help, and some warm hugs. Meanwhile, Bean digs for treasure nearby - she returns with a snorkel mask. With that mask in place, Billie gives the water another go. What wonder she finds below the surface!

Told with warmth, and illustrated with light-infused beach scenes, the book invites discussion of familiar events for young readers. Keeping the secret of what Billie found while snorkeling offers mystery.

What a lovely summer day!
