The Museum of Everything, written and illustrated by Lynne Rae Perkins. Greenwillow, Harper. 2021. $21.99 ages 4 and up

"I might make a whole Museum of Islands,
because there are so many different kinds.

And all different sizes. Some islands only
have room for one person at a time.

Other islands are so big, you can't see all of the
edges, even from the top of a very high hill.
"

Before you read the words, please take the time to pore over every amazing, intriguing, wondrous image 'made of watercolor on watercolor paper, sometimes cut and/or folded, along with sand, twigs, wood, moss, wool, foamcore board, fabric, embroidery thread, modeling clay, lights, two tiny clay figures made by Marcia Hovland, and many, many, many odds and ends. It was the most fun ever." Imagine! That description doesn't mention the textures, colors, light and shadow, perspective, the design, or the story itself. So much to ponder, and savor. You need to see it!

The child who narrates describes a world that is loud, big and busy. When that happens, it is easier to think in terms of small bits at a time ... like being in a museum and paying attention to one exhibit before moving on to the next. Why not a museum that displays all those things children (at least, this particular child) wonder about in their world? As the child considers such things, a model for display is created.

Thinking carefully about the natural world and making connections, as is done in this thoughtful text, will give readers of all ages pause to consider their own 'museum of everything'.  Spending time there allows a return the busyness of the real world.

"It's a real museum, a Museum of Little Things.
I like to sit and look at them, one at a time and
all together.
"
