"Will we get lost in the dark
up there?" wondered Mole.
"No," said Bear.
"We'll be together."
"Okay, let's go," said Mole.
Bear rolled.
Mole stuffed.
They put on their packs."
Add this new book to your treasure trove of other books about Bear and Mole. Previous books include: Spring Is Here (Holiday House, 2011), Kite Day (Holiday House, 2012), Off We Go! (Holiday House, 21013), and All For a Dime (Holiday House, 2016). They would make a great starter set for a new baby or preschooler with an upcoming birthday. The characters are charming, their stories are comfortable, and it is always lovely to see familiar figures in more than one book.
It is also fun for this time of year as it involves a camping trip. Mole is keen to sleep outside; Bear is ever accommodating. A touch apprehensive about getting lost in the dark, Mole asks if they might. Bear assures that being together is good protection from such worry. Readying themselves for adventure, they set off.
When darkness descends, Mole repeats his concerns. Bear has a story to tell that will prevent them getting lost by following the stars. It is a story of the earliest bear family. In their time, the sky was very dark and they had great difficulty seeing anything at night. First Little Bear helped his mother fashion a shining moon. Then, tossed white stones into the sky. When Papa Bear got involved, he could not move one star, no matter how hard he pushed. That stalwart star always pointed north and was named First Star. And so the story goes.
This wondrous night of star gazing is created with direct impression media and pencil. The illustration are predominately blue, and luminous. A perfect antidote to fear of the dark for two overnight campers.
