Waiting for Goliath, by Antje Damm. Translated by Sally-Ann Spencer. Gecko Press, Thomas Allen & Son. 2017. $13.95 ages 3 and up

"Bear waits patiently
for his friend. The robins
fly south and the first
snow falls.

When Bear awakes from
a long sleep, he hears a
noise like a hand sliding
slowly across paper.

Goliath is coming!"

After sharing a story of friendship, patience, and the natural world yesterday, I thought I would continue the trend with this new book about Bear and a lovely lesson taught. It is obvious to many of us how impatient society has become. We don't get instant information, we can't wait at a stoplight for the 30 seconds it takes to change without irritation, we expect every text to be answered immediately, and don't get me started on how busy we all are ... busy enough that we can't read to kids in school classrooms, or to our kids at night, or even to ourselves. Come on!

We should all take a lesson from Bear. He is waiting for his best friend, Goliath, even as seasons change and he is besieged with questions and comments from a nearby robin. Bear is very happy to share what it is about Goliath that makes him so special. Bear never loses patience or belief in his friend. How happy he is when Goliath finally arrives with an earnest excuse:

“I came as fast as I could.”

Bear knows Goliath is right. You will learn why when you read this meticulously designed book, with beautifully photographed dioramas. The characters are drawn, colored, cut out and placed in each scene. The materials used to create the dioramas will be recognized by young readers and might encourage them to give such artwork a go.

Bear has endurance and an uncanny trust that his best friend will do as he promised. Good for him! He is a shining example for each one of us. The writing is uncomplicated, the story full of wonder, and the art encourages careful scrutiny and endless revisits.
