where is tippy toes, written and illustrated by Betsy Lewin. Somon & Schuster, 2010. $21.99 ages 3 and up

"But nobody knows
where Tippy Toes goes...
when the night is alight
with firefly shows."

Tippy Toes peeks through a circular frame on the title page of this lovely new book, eyes glued to something we cannot see. As we turn the page and begin the story, we learn that everyone knows of Tippy Toe's antics as the day progresses. A sneaky, orange cat with a hunger for action we watch as the mouse trembles in its mousehole when Tippy Toes steps on its welcome mat. We revel in a close call with a garden hose and a snooze in a dresser drawer.

But, where does Tippy Toes go at night? The owl might be of assistance, but there is really only one person who knows the truth and is willing to share Tippy Toes' secret. It is a peaceful ending to a productive day.

This book is made to be shared with a young audience. It has a rhythm that makes it fun to read out loud and we all know how much little ones enjoy animal stories. Add to that the bright daytime colors, and the deep blues and reflected moonlight that evening brings and you have a winsome, sweet bedtime story. Listeners will love the cut-out pages that reveal favored hiding places, and the surprise ending.

Simply told, and executed in bright, bold colors this is a story that will call for repeated readings.
