Silas' Seven Grandparents, written by Anita Horrocks and illustrated by Helen Flook. Orca, 2010. $19.95 ages 4 and up

"Silas' seven grandparents gave him presents on his birthday. Six grandparents baked birthday cakes, and one bought an ice-cream cake."

Would that we were all lucky enough to have seven grandparents...and each unique in a wonderful way! Most of the time Silas likes each and every one of them. He is so loved. But seven cakes for a birthday, each one requiring a taste. Or, seven helpers at hockey when there is only one pair of skates. Even seven grandparents on hand when Silas is sick and in need of comfort. It can be TOO MUCH!

When Silas' parents decide on a small holiday without him, the grandparents each want Silas to stay with them. Nana says they will sleep on the roof and count stars.
Oma and Opa offer baking and building. Gramma and Papa think golfing and swimming might be the ticket. Granny and Granddad will take him to a powwow and fishing in their canoe. What's a boy to do? No matter what he chooses, disappointment will be etched on the faces of those not chosen. Poor Silas!

Sleepless, Silas watches the moon pass by his window and in so doing, it offers a solution that Silas thinks might be the answer. The following morning he works diligently to get letters in the mail to all of his seven grandparents, offering up his best idea yet. And, it's perfect!
