Planetwatch, written by Martyn Bramwell, David Burnie, Lynn Dicks, Roger Few. DK, Tourmaline Editions, 2009. $17.99 ages 8 and up

"...most floods are harmful, and their effects are getting worse. One reason is that more people now live in areas prone to floods. Another is that the world's climate is changing, making floods more severe."

This valuable and informative book is described as being for young people and is a guide to protecting our world. As have so many books published recently about the envrionment and global warming, it provides a plethora of well-documented text to keep our kids interested in what is happening on our home, Earth. The photographs are, at times, spectacular and jaw-dropping. All are clear and a needed accompaniemnent to the information being shared.

In two page spreads the authors include quotes, graphs, and full-color photos of topics in categories...earth, water, animals, food. Some things discussed are the pressure that population has placed on the earth, rising sea levels, animal harvest and famine. The information is placed in captions, boxes and small chunks that will make it accessible to the target audience. It allows readers to choose their interests in world issues and return to find out more. A glossary and index are helpful. There is a long list of organizations that can be accessed on the internet for those who want to take a stand and help in whatever ways they can. Again the message is clear...if we work together, we can make a change that will benefit our lives for now and for the future. This book will help interested kids get started!
