"The mockingbirds were singing, the brook was babbling, and the leaves were rustling in the summer breeze. But Violet couldn't hear any of it, because Winston was crunching on carrots."
In three short easy-to-read stories we meet and get to know two best friends, one a swan and one a duck. In the first they are having a lovely afternoon picnic and the crunching starts. Violet is aghast and decides she will join the cacaphony by eating peanut brittle. Winston would love to share some. A friend to the end, Violet shares and must endure even louder food crunching noise. When she can't take it anymore, she sticks her fingers in her ears. Winston wonders why. She gently tells him and he says he will stop. Of course, the food is gone. All is well. Then, Winston falls asleep and his snoring fills the air. The second is about missing glasses. The Queen of Finding Things and the King of Losing Things are on the hunt for Winston's glasses. When they get back to their starting point, they have a surprise in store. Finally, Winston organizes a garage sale and Violet helps out. Well, help might not be the right word!
These stories are perfect for young readers wanting to try a book that is a bit longer and more sophisticated than the stories they have been reading. It is called a beginning chapter book because it is just that. It is with great pride that they move forward to something a bit different and more like the chapter books they see their older siblings, or reading partners, reading. It is a big step! These loving, funny stories are a great beginning.
