"Pockets are nifty
for holding a quarter,
for holding a key,
or for holding a shell.
But the world is full of many more things
that don't fit in pockets so very well:
You can't put spring in a pocket -
not summer,
not winter,
not fall.
How could you pocket a giggle>
An elephant won't fit at all!"
It's always so much fun for me to share poetry in classrooms. Kids love to listen to the language that poets use, and set their minds to imagining what the poet is describing, while they listen. The word choice, the rhythms of the language and the concise way of saying what needs to be said are all evident when you share poetry with your children, or in your classrooms.
Bobbi Katz has chosen wonderful poems to fit in a pocket. They help to make every day a 'poetry day'. Just think of the fun when everyone you ask has a poem in thier pocket to share...and they are willing to share it with you. 'Keep a poem in your pocket' is a perfect mantra for anyone interested in making poetry a daily delight. As we share the poems that Bobbi Katz has so carefully selected in her second book of pocket poems, we want our kids to realize that poetry is an accessible form for their writing. We want to share poems that make them say, 'Hey, I want to do that!' or 'I think I CAN do that!'
A poem in your pocket can keep you company any day of the year, and provide entertainment for everyone you meet.
